My introduction to meditation began when I started my yoga practice just over five years ago. Guided yoga sessions provided to me by my local gym often started with setting an intention for the class such as focusing on being present, allowing yourself grace for all you're able and not able to do, or showing gratitude for the skin you're in. We would finish each class with savasana, which is a corpse pose where you lay still on your back and allow your body to be fully supported by the earth and allow your mind to find quietness. I began to feel the positive effects within my body before learning the long list of benefits of this quick 5–10-minute meditation practice.
- Complete relaxation of the physical body
- A calm and positive mind
- Improved focus and concentration
- Reduced blood pressure
- Raised awareness of the “Inner Self”
- Letting go of the ego and attachment to material things
- Connection with a spiritual source
- Repair of tissues and cells
- Reduction of stress, anxiety, and insomnia
- Grounding the body and reducing Vata dosha
- Relief of muscular tension
It wasn't long before I was seeking more knowledge on the subject and found my way to Jeff Warren's series on the Calm app, "How to Mediate, A Daily Practice". It was a relief not to hear an overly exaggerated airy voice telling me to find something I've never heard of before. Jeff came across as a down to earth guy, who practiced for himself and found a passion within it that led him to help others begin their journey.
Here it is important to note that you can't be "good or bad" at meditation. You can only practice it. Start with a deep focus on one single thing happening in the present moment. Perhaps it's a sound, a smell, a feeling within your body or your breath. As you catch your mind wandering off to other things, that is your opportunity to practice refocusing your mind. Each time you catch yourself wondering and come back to the one area of intention for that practice you are strengthening your deeper level of consciousness.
With a deeper level of consciousness, I started to respond in life situations instead of reacting on autopilot pre-programmed plane of existance. My responses were more kind and more in line with the person I wanted to be instead of the person that society had created.
As I began my awareness of deeper consciousness, I began exploring how to create a more purposeful life for myself, through affirmations, manifesting, and exploring what spoke to my truth for life. With a stronger life purpose and goal, I came to grow a wholeness within, and moments of loneliness, helplessness, and depression slowly began melting away. Finding answers within instead of looking externally for my answers proved to serve my greatest good. Now I begin each day with a meditation, and if I have free time between clients, I’ll often climb upon my treatment bed and journey within.
I thoroughly enjoy a few podcasts that offer guided meditations to find spirit guides (angels), power animals, sacred gardens and even discovering what the consciousness is trying to say. It sparks some of the magic I used to find readily available in the world as a child. Spotify’s podcast, Wisdom Rising, was one I found a lot of fun guided meditations on the subject. The One You Feed, and Huberman Lab podcasts are my personal favorites for understanding the science behind mediations and neuroplasticity within our mind. I also created a go to meditation playlist, which I’m happy to share.
